Great River B & B The property is a pioneer Swedish stone cottage built in 1869 by the co-founder of the village of Stockholm. From our large screened in porch we offer peace and solitude on 43 acres of lawn, woods, and open meadow over looking Lake Pepin (the Mississippi River). The two- story cottage as shown here is rented for the exclusive use of only one party (one or two people only) ensuring absolute privacy. When we have guests, we stay at our nearby second home, and return in the morning to prepare a light breakfast if desired. The editors of Midwest Living magazine selected us as one of their personal favorite “special places” in the upper Midwest. We invite you to visit us in 2009 and help us celebrate over 20 years as a B & B and hope you too will agree that it is indeed a special place. Visit our photo album. Stockholm Institute |
Spring Street |
Stockholm, WI 54769 |
Description: |
In the Village of Stockholm there is a small, picturesque museum in a building that was once the old Post Office. It is the home of the Stockholm Institute, a historical society incorporated in 1984 to preserve and celebrate the history of the Stockholm area. Stockholm was fortunate to have been the home of Orlin Anderson, now deceased, who was a dedicated amateur historian and archiver of all things related to the area. He was also a dedicated pack-rat and because of that predilection there are probably items and photos in the museum that would otherwise have been long lost. Orlin’s enthusiasm for all things old encouraged others to donate their objects, books, and photos, and it may have been the accumulation of items that inspired insightful residents to create an organization that would preserve and display this wealth of material and memories. Thus was born the Institute. Its visitors come from across the country and around the world. It publishes a regular newsletter for its members, and in the past has been a sponsor of the Heritage Days that Stockholm has hosted. In 2006, the Institute welcomed the 50-member Bjurtjarn Theater Group. This group toured the U.S. performing its play “Off to America – They Sold their Homesteads" (a story about their ancestors who founded Stockholm). After the events and festivities, the theater group donated the rights to the play to the Stockholm Institute. The Institute’s museum building has recently been refurbished and redecorated in an appropriate Swedish palette, with new shelves for books and a large work table available for visitors who wish to review the family histories that have been gathered. A local archivist is also in the process of identifying and organizing the Institute’s wealth of material (some of it retrieved from Orlin’s estate) so that it remains usable to future historians. |

On a widespot on the Great River, in a village that was once nothing more than a widespot in the road, the re-birth of a center for the arts takes place. Once the Stockholm Opera Hall, now the home to the WideSpot Performing Arts Center and Community Project, the 100+ year old space is once again becoming the center piece of the community and a vibrant, creative home for the performing arts of all kinds. Expect the unexpected. One weekend you may find theater and classical music, the next might bring independent film and a gospel "hotdish" brunch, followed by dance, comedy, poetry.... a deep palate of the arts. All of this being expertly choreographed and curated by a staff deeply dedicated to the arts and the power of the arts in building community. The not-for-profit Center will be available for community use during non-performance times and a portion of proceeds will be dedicated to local organizations and charities.
